What is the School Completion Programme?

St. Brendan’s College, under the DEIS scheme has been part of the School Completion Programme since 2007. Roisin Heavey is the Project Worker for the North Mayo School Completion Programme. As Project Worker for the North Mayo School Completion Programme, Roisin will be working in St Brendan’s College every Monday and Wednesday. Her role is to provide support to students to help them with attendance, participation and to promote positive outcomes in school.

She will be providing a range of supports to many students depending on their needs.
Supports Provided:

  • One to One support (Needs include – Attendance, Anxiety, Motivation, Organisation and Study Skills, Friendship etc.)
  • Small Group Support (Working Things Out, Decider Skills, Mentoring for Achievement, Mentor Programme, Smart Moves, Mind Out)
  • Lunch Clubs
  • Summer Camp

The School Completion Programme (SCP) provides support to children and young people to help them to get the most from their education.

North Mayo SCP project focuses on:

  1. Improving children’s attendance at school.
  2. Improving children’s participation in school (involvement in class and school activities).
  3. Improving children’s retention (staying in school).

What Supports can SCP offer?

North Mayo SCP project can provide a range of supports to children and young people depending on their individual needs. Programmes are run in-school, after school and during holidays.

Examples of programmes run through SCP to date include

Homework Club

The Homework Club runs every Monday from 4.00pm -5.30pm for all 1st and 2nd year students. It offers students a safe and structured environment to complete their homework.

Group Support for Students

The project worker meets weekly with groups of students to work on a specific need identified. Support may include help with; Social Skills, Self–Esteem, Anger Management, Homework Support, Attendance Monitoring.

Drawing and Talking

Drawing and Talking is a child-centred therapy focusing on healing underlying emotional pain. It can be delivered to individual students who have suffered trauma which is affecting their mental health and well-being. This therapy is facilitated by the Project Worker.

Summer Programmes

Transfer programmes for incoming first years are held in the school to help students familiarise themselves with the school. The 2 day Summer Programme helps to ease the students into their new environment and to offer them a strong personal welcome.

Individual Support for some Students

The project worker meets weekly with individual students to work on a specific need identified. Support may include help with; Social Skills, Self–Esteem, Anger Management, Homework Support and Attendance Monitoring.

Mentoring for Achievement Programme (MAP)

The Mentoring for Achievement Programme (MAP) is an evidence based programme delivered by the project worker to individual students. It aims to help students become more organised, attentive, patient and equip student with problem solving skills.

Art / Play Therapy

The SCP offers students who need therapeutic support access to trained Art therapists and Play therapists.

Counselling

The SCP offers students who need therapeutic support access to trained counsellors.

Individual Curriculum

Extra academic support offered to students who do not have the Department of Education and Science resource hours.
